The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI) was created to serve both donors and nonprofit organizations of the Virgin Islands that want to ensure the highest quality of life for both present and future generations. Its primary goal is to build a growing collection of permanent funds, the income from which will be used to enhance the educational, physical, social, cultural and environmental well-being of the islands' people.
The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands was established in 1990 with a $500,000 endowment from Henry and Charlotte Kimelman. Today, CFVI manages more than ninety named funds, administers scholarships and award programs, and coordinates the establishment of memorial funds. Donors can make unrestricted contributions—indicating a general field of interest (the arts, education, early child care, the environment)—or direct the Foundation's board to use its judgment for awarding the funds. CFVI has established named funds with over $5 million in endowed assets and more than $1 million in annual grants, awards and scholarships across St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island.
